Before you fly: the skint checklist

  1. ESTA: apply only at esta.cbp.dhs.gov or in the official app. It costs $40.27 if approved ($10.27 if refused) from 1 Jan 2026, and is generally valid for two years USAGov.
  2. Passport: you need an e-passport. Check the entry rules on GOV.UK FCDO.
  3. Travel insurance with proper US medical cover (US healthcare is very expensive).
  4. Driving: licence and credit card for the deposit. See car hire.
  5. Visitor Toll Pass reserved in the app if you're hiring from MCO.
  6. Card with no foreign-transaction fees. See money.
  7. Power adaptor (US Type A/B plugs).
